Grade: K-5
Teacher Name: Priscilla Shaner- STEAM Educator
Description and purpose of grant:
This project will provide learners with engaging, hands-on STEAM opportunities using LEGO® Education Science Kits (K–2 and 3–5) and ChompShop Saws. With LEGO Science lessons, students will follow the 5E model to explore TEKS-aligned topics in life, physical, earth, and space science while building problem-solving projects that connect science to the real world. The lessons include built-in assessments, fostering both curiosity and accountability. The ChompShop saws will empower students to independently and safely cut cardboard for engineering design challenges, unlocking creativity with smoother cuts and custom shapes. Together, these tools make science and engineering come alive for all learners.
Implementation process:
With the LEGO Education Science kits, I plan to teach the TEKS-aligned grade-level lessons provided and give learners hands-on experiences in which they use the LEGO Science to build a project to solve a problem given to them in the lesson.
With the ChompShop saws, I plan to provide learners with engineering design projects that allow for learners to creatively use cardboard in their builds. They will now have the ability to be more independent because they will have a child-safe cardboard-cutting power tool to help them make their ideas come to life.
This grant is sustainable in that no teacher licenses will need to be purchased and if replacement parts for the LEGO kits need to be purchased in the future, they are inexpensive and on a brick-by-brick basis.
This grant will benefit all 700+ K-5 learners at the school and can be used for years to come. Since the LEGO Science Kits lessons are different for each grade level, learners can have new experiences as they progress through their schooling experience. The LEGO Science kits do not require an iPad.
