Description and purpose of grant:  

A sensory room is a specially designed therapeutic space that provides controlled sensory experiences—like special lighting, sounds, and textures—to help individuals, particularly children with autism or sensory processing disorders, regulate their emotions, manage stress, and develop focus. These rooms can be active, offering stimulating activities for those who crave input, or calming, providing a safe retreat for those who are overstimulated.  It provides a safe and predictable space where the intensity and type of sensory input can be managed. 
 
We have a wonderful sensory room that we are always looking to add to or change out items to keep the students from becoming disinterested. These new items would give our sensory room the refresh it needs to constantly revolve.

 

Implementation process:  Sensory rooms are especially helpful for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental disabilities. They also serve as a valuable resource for anyone who needs a quiet space to decompress and manage sensory input. Our sensory room is available for the entire campus to use. Students use the room in small groups or individually.The items this grant would provide would add several elements of tactile and visual input.
